VoiceOver on iOS Quick Start Guide
Updated for iOS 17 and 2024 accessibility standards. Applies to iPhone and iPad.
Turning VoiceOver On/Off
- Quick Toggle: Triple-click the Side or Home button (if configured).
- Using Siri: Say "Turn on VoiceOver" or "Turn off VoiceOver".
- Settings: Go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver.
Basic
- Explore by Touch: Drag your finger around the screen to hear items announced.
- Swipe Right: Move to next item.
- Swipe Left: Move to previous item.
- Double-Tap Anywhere: Activate the selected item ("double-tap to activate").
- Two-Finger Double-Tap: Start/Stop current action (like play/pause media).
Rotor (Quick Tool)
- Activate Rotor: Rotate two fingers on the screen like turning a dial.
- Use Rotor to select: Headings, Links, Form Controls, Containers, etc.
- After selecting, Swipe Up/Down: Move between items of the chosen type.
Typing Modes
- Standard Typing: Tap to select letter, then double-tap to input.
- Touch Typing: Tap a letter and lift finger to input it automatically.
Common Multi-Finger Gestures
- Three-Finger Swipe Up/Down: Scroll one page at a time.
- Three-Finger Double-Tap: Toggle speech on/off.
- Four-Finger Tap Top/Bottom: Go to first/last element on screen.
Other Useful Tips
- Practice Mode: Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > VoiceOver Practice.
- VoiceOver Recognition (Optional): Can recognize unlabelled images/buttons (iOS 14+).
